PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This 5 day mini unit on animal adaptations is student centered, engaging, and integrated! Included are full lesson plans, worksheets, 4 center games and activities, assessments!

Day 1 – My adaptations
- Students will explore what makes them able to survive as humans. They will look at how human adaptations are different than animal adaptations and how and why humans can live in nearly every kind of ecosystem. This is an introductory lesson that is meant to help students make personal connections to the concept and give them a framework to learn about animal adaptations. They have homework that will get them thinking about animal adaptations and give the teacher an idea of what they know and might be struggling with.

Day 2 – Ecosystems
- This lesson connects to the last lesson and will lead into the next lesson. On day 1, students look at how humans can conform to where they live, but animals cannot, which is why they have more diverse adaptations. So this lesson, gives the students the foundation they need to understand animal adaptations, because they are created by the animal’s ecosystem. They will look at every kind of ecosystem in isolation and then work together to think of what animal will live in that ecosystem. This gets them thinking about why these animals can live there.
Day 3 – Centers
- On this day the students will look at specific kinds of adaptations that animals use to help them survive in their ecosystems. They will look at different kinds of eyes, predator and prey relationship, camouflage, and even examine a real creature to determine how different adaptations help different animals and why. This will give the students a variety of opportunities and experiences to explore adaptations and along with discussion and teacher guidance, they should begin to make connections about the material.
Day 4 – Bird Beaks
- This lesson gives the class a chance to look at one adaptation in isolation and gives the teacher the chance to check student learning and guide them through the thinking they should have by this point (if they need it). Through a type of game, followed by a realistic application the students not only feel like birds and understand why they need different beaks, but they can look at real birds and their beaks and make that connection to the real world.
Day 5 – Animal Creation
- This is the cumulating lesson that will give the students the chance to demonstrate what they have learned and give the teacher the chance to see if the material was grasped meaningfully. Through brainstorming, drawing, and writing they will be able to put their ideas on paper in a fun and personal way.
