WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE! This is a 4 – 6 week trans-disciplinary unit study, with the theme of sharing the planet, using the rainforest as the lens through which we inquire into the central idea. The lessons are presented in an order that made sense to me as I was planning. You, of course, can take them in any order you prefer for your class needs.
****Out of these 60 pages, 31 of them are fully reproducible activities, worksheets, journals and research materials for the students use.
Central Idea: How living things are interconnected, adapt and change in predictable patterns according to their ecosystem.
Every lesson is based around key concepts. I teach in an I.B school and therefore I plan around concepts. The CCSS ELA and Math standards are planned for 4th grade.
Much of the learning is inquiry based and takes place over a period of time, using science experiments to convey the concepts to the students, hopefully answering their inquiries as the science progresses.
I have included a list of resources that you may find useful. These include books, movies and websites.
The language is introduced steadily throughout the unit and can be front-loaded or not, as you prefer for your class needs.
Please feel free to ask questions if you find anything to be unclear. I’d be happy to clarify. Your feedback will also assist in my constant efforts to improve my work.
