HOW I USE THIS PROGRAM:
I administer the WTW elementary spelling inventory the first week of school and use it to determine each student's level. Rather than grouping students at similar levels, I give each student his/her own list at exactly his level. Initially, students may skip around and jump over lists as they may have gaps of particular patterns. Eventually, students just progress from one list to the next.
Students complete word sorts and other activities in spelling spiral notebooks each week. Their weekly spelling tests are administered through spellingcity.com. I have a paid account and have uploaded all my lists there. Each student who scores an 83% or higher gets to move on to the next list; students who do not meet this score keep their list to keep working with it another week so they can truly master the pattern. I use the test score recording sheet to keep an at-a-glance record of which students are on which lists and which students need a new list for the next week.
ABOUT THE LISTS:
The lists are based on the Words Their Way sorts. The first 25 lists are 12 words long; all others are 15 words. Not all lists have words that exactly match the WTW sorts, but the patterns included in these 80 lists progress through the WTW levels--like an abridged version of the whole program.
