UPDATED: I have added CCSS for Grade 5 (although this unit may be used for grades 4 or 6).
This two-week Unit Plan maps out everything you need for a complete reading and writing workshop inspired by the novel "Bud, Not Buddy" by Christopher Paul Curtis! It also includes a plan for the teacher to read-aloud "The Watsons Go to Birmingham" by the same author in tandem with the reading of "Bud, Not Buddy" by the students. It was originally created for a 5th grade class, but it can be tailored to a 4th or 6th grade class as well.
*Unit "Weeks-At-A-Glance" page
*Before, during, and after reading activities, along with corresponding reading/writing mini-lessons
*A teacher script for each mini-lesson
*A Story Map Template
*Word Wall word lists
*A writing rubric exemplar
*Open-ended discussion starters...and more!
Goals for the Unit: Students will partake in meaningful discussion and daily writing tasks while interacting with literature. Ideally, they will develop an understanding for those who are suffering and overcoming obstacles by looking outside of themselves and seeing things from the protagonist’s perspective. They will also reflect personally on their own life experiences in order to create an authentic personal writing piece of their own after experiencing and studying Christopher Paul Curtis’s award-winning novel.
Objectives: Students will focus on two main reading strategies: Visualizing and Inferring. They will also experiment with writing in the organization and development of a personal narrative that exhibits voice.
