This package, created by Dr. Broome, contains a complete month-long unit on the classic mystery novel And Then There Were None. The most noteworthy feature is the comprehensive vocabulary glossary. This unit actually includes three glossaries: a 586-item combined glossary (both common vocabulary in the novel and British English/slang of the time period); a period slang glossary; and a glossary with only SAT vocabulary found in And Then There Were None. The unit contains lessons and ready-to-go reproducible documents that cover characterization, plot development, suspense, mood, theme, and motif. The unit also includes a variety of assessments. There are two essay assignments (an in-class assignment with four topic choices and a take-home assignment with ten topic choices); a 50-question unit test (30 matching and 20 multiple choice questions); and seven reading comprehension quizzes that cover two chapters at a time. The test and quizzes come with a complete answer key that includes detailed explanations of each answer and provides page numbers for textual evidence that supports the answer. This unit is intended for high school students and can be adapted for multiple ability levels. I have used these materials with students in the ninth grade and in Advanced Placement courses. The materials are designed so that teachers can easily differentiate instruction by assigning different questions or activities based on ability or grade level.
