What You Get
10 Lessons on the following poem/styles:
Acrostic/ Name poetry
Concrete/ pattern poetry
Voice/ "I am" poetry
Each lesson can go at your speed, depending on how much support your students need on independently writing each poem. For example in my class, diamante poems are quick, but limericks take more time. Some days we can do three lessons, other times I have to spend two or more days on a particular poetry style. It takes my class about 3 weeks to completely finish the lessons and booklets before we test, but use your own discretion at pacing.
I’ve chosen to keep these pages in all black and white for ease of printing.
The lessons can be printed whole page or half page, as can the “Poetry Portfolio” booklet. In my room, I bind the whole-page lessons in a booklet that the students do not write in (so that I can use them multiple times). They write rough drafts on lined paper for easier editing, then final drafts are written on the full page “Poetry Portfolio” booklet sheets. I require an illustration of the poem on each page. The kids keep their final drafts in a “Portfolio” made from an extra-long piece of construction paper that is folded over and taped on the sides creating a “folder”. On the outside of the folder is a glued down copy of the booklet’s cover page. On the back side of the folder is a glued down copy of the grading checklist.
For the Poetry Test, I use the “References” page as a study guide for review.
Check out the Preview for a free copy of a simplified version of the half-page "Poetry Portfolios".
