3 Prompts with Paired Texts for Text-Based Persuasive Writing
This unit provides step-by-step lessons for teaching students how to structure a paragraph, including strong topic and closing sentences, and detail sentences with supporting explanations. Students are taught to recognize and use persuasive language and transition words and phrases. They use the provided mentor texts to identify these paragraph elements and recognize how they work together in a persuasive piece.
The lessons are scaffolded so that students begin by writing and supporting their own opinions about topics that are part of their daily lives. By the end of the unit, they are writing to satisfy prompts, using evidence from informational texts that are supplied with this unit.
Included in this product are step-by-step lesson plans, mentor texts, student practice pages, student reference pages for persuasive language and transition words, graphic organizers for persuasive writing, a list of persuasive writing topics that draw on students’ own experiences, 3 writing prompts with accompanying paired text selections, and a power point presentation. A simple rubric is also included, though many districts have adopted rubrics for writing that teachers may wish to use instead.
This is a truly comprehensive teaching unit that will save you a bunch of time and guide your young writers to proficiency in persuasive writing.
