This product includes a easy checklist and rubric used to ensure that students in any class (Science, Math, History, Electives, etc) are writing complete sentences. I have heard many elementary, middle, and high school teachers complain that they can not get their students to write in complete sentences. This checklist and rubric is a simple solution to a big problem and will benefit elementary, middle, and high school students!
Many students can write in complete sentences, but choose to write in short phrases instead because they know that their non-language arts teacher may not take off any points even though the directions may call for complete sentences. The problem is that we “non-language” arts teachers do not always have a simple way to hold students accountable for their writing, and still grade for our own content area with out being overwhelmed. How many points do we take off? How can we grade consistently each time?
The checklist and rubrics provided in this document can be used to improve writing skills in your class room. They are simple to use and make the grading process go by very quickly. I have found that the more I use these rubrics, the more my students improve. I use the formative assessment for when I do not want to take points off for accuracy of content because I just want to figure out what they have learned or what misconceptions they might have. I do, however, want them to practice and use their writing skills. I use the summative assessment for when I feel they are ready to be tested on the content. An example of how to use the checklist and rubric is included.
I have found that there is a greater chance for students to write in complete sentences if they are held accountable for their writing. This rubric does not account for all grammar issues. It is only a start. I think we can tackle bigger issues later if we can handle these small ones now. I use the writing rubric for formative assessment as bell work, entry slips, exit slips, etc. I use the writing rubric for summative assessment on tests and quizzes. The rubric is designed for assignments that require at least three complete sentences, but the checklist can be used easily for what ever amount of writing that you need the student to do.
