All children are inquisitive and have a strong need to have their questions answered and their thoughts heard. Some struggle with filtering their thoughts. They often are unable to save their fabulous yet totally off topic questions for a more appropriate time or to think their possibly rude comment that may hurt someone’s feelings in their head. Children also experience times when they are so consumed with a thought or worry that they are unable to move on with their daily activities. The strategies taught in this “Think it in Your Head” unit can help! These lessons can help any student, but are especially helpful when working with students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). These lessons visually teach and reinforce “Thinking it in Your Head” as well as making your thought small enough to have it rest in the back of your head until it can be addressed at a later time. This “Think it in Your Head” unit consists of six lesson plans. Each lesson can be implemented in approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Lesson plans include related activities designed to help generalize the target social skill. Each lesson includes a “Catch Phrase” which teachers and parents can use as a simple prompt to promote on task behavior.
