This is everything I teach first semester/second semester of WORLD HISTORY with all of the tests included. The units I cover (first semester) as a 10th grade World History teacher are: Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, The Enlightenment, The French Revolution, The Industrial Revolution and Imperialism. Second semester is all about WWI, Russian Revolution, Totalitarianism, WWII, and Cold War.

I. Ancient Greece:

-1. MAP OF GREECE- I always start with a map of Greece as it is a great way to set the stage. It is always easier to do this in class as it is the best way to answer all questions and to make sure the students are doing what they are supposed to be doing. The students will be drawing a map and labeling it on their own using their book.

-2. BRONZE, DARK, AND GOLDEN AGES I start with this as it provides a great way to introduce the three stages of progression the Greeks go through in their societal changes. I will try and focus on the Golden Ages with Socrates, Plato and Aristotle as well as Alexander the Great's importance and significance. This will be in PPT and KEYNOTE format for adjustments.

-3. ARISTOTLE AND PLATO ASSIGNMENT I will spend some time having the students read this in class. This is a wonderful assignment that provides a lot of good discussion. I am sorry I do not have the key with it as it as at my school.

-3B- PLATO REPUBLIC SHORT VERSIONI have included this as a shorter version of the above. It only deals with the Republic with 4 questions. I do not have the key at this time which I apologize for.

-4. SOCRATES, ARISTOTLE, PLATO QUOTES With these you can select or delete the ones you do not want to provide the kind of discussion that you want. I pass these out and have the students write whether they agree or disagree with the quote and a short explanation of why they agree or disagree. The best part about this is the discussion afterword.

-5. DIRECT AND IN DIRECT DEMOCRACY This lesson shows some actual pictures of Greece as well as a concept attainment about direct and in direct democracy.

- 6. PARAGRAPH ASSIGNMENT This assignment will be for the brave as I do not have the keys for this at the time. I start with explaining how to write a basic paragraph. This takes about 20 minutes to do this and is a great way to set the stage for expectations regarding the year. I then turn the students loose on investigating some of the differing characteristics of each of the three different cities within Greece: Athens, Sparta, and Corinth. Each city is completely different as they have different cultures but do embrace some things that are the same. I do not have the key for the chart but will post one up once I get back to school in September. You can email me as well and I will send it over. I have the students use the links provided on the paragraph rubric to fill in their chart. The chart will then be used to write 2 separate paragraphs to get the students used to writing compare and contrast paragraphs.

- 7. ALEXANDER THE GREAT While the students are working on this assignment I typically show this. I do not have the students take notes but do give a 5 question quiz after the video. The link is below.

- 8. FALL OF GREECE Just a great little short reading on the Fall of Greece. Easy to use and read for all levels. ( 2 different versions)

-9. FAMOUS FIGURE EVALUATION - Having students evaluate these famous figures is a great way to have students dig deeper into these famous figures. It includes 6 page bios, a lesson plan, PPT, and a quote analysis sheet for each of them.

- 10. ADDITIONAL GREECE NOTES: These are some additional notes in case you need them or want to use them to teach from.

- 11. GREEK COIN PROJECT – This is a really basic project that I made 20 years ago. I do not have any samples and is good if you have time to do it.

- 12. SOPHOMORE STRAIGHT DOPE – This is a great explanation of where the word and term sophomore came from. It is a 2 page reading and is really informative.

- 13. SOCRATIC SEMINAR – This is a great way to introduce students to a Socratic Dialogue. I have included the Dialogue sheet that goes with the activity. Lots of options on this one day activity.

II. Ancient Rome:

- 1. THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF ROME This is an 18 slide intro to the contributions of Rome. Please make sure to go over the organization of the government first. It is in PDF format and covers all the major contributions of Rome. Government, Roads, Law, Toast, Calendar, baths, spas, concrete, aqueducts and teeth. This is my introduction to teaching about Rome.

- 2. RELIGIONS OF ROME This is a fantastic way to go over the religions of Rome. I love teaching my students about the different roles Jews and Christians played within the Roman Society. I also, love explaining to them why Christianity is where it is within the world today as I take 2 days to explain it. Surprisingly many students do not know much about Christianity today and this is a great way to talk about it with the students.

- 3. BEN HUR CLIP This is the famous chariot race scene as Charlton Heston is riding the white horse and the Roman is riding the Black horse. Judah ultimately wins in one of the most famous races in film. Someone actually dies in the filming of this as it is pretty darn exciting as my students enjoy watching this every year.

- 4. MANKIND THE STORY OF ALL OF US This episode deals with the death of Jesus and the Rise of Christianity within Rome. It also deals with Rome as an Empire and some of the great contributions of this civilization. China is brought into the show as the silk road is talked about and discussed as China is important to the expansion of trade and sharing of ideas. The last segment is about Paul and how Christianity rose and became an important part of the empire as they built Constantine. I think this episode fits well within the context of World History either 10th grade or 8th. I use it in my 10th grade classroom and it is perfect.

- 5. ENGINEERING AN EMPIRE VIDEO The Rise and Fall of the Roman Emperors. I show this in class as it takes 2 days. I feel it gives the students a feel for how the emperors operate and the kinds of contributions that they accomplished in their empires. I have the students write down each empire and the contribution of each empire and why that would be important for us today.

Engineering an Empire PART I AND PART II

- 6. FALL OF ROME I go through the the 8 reasons why Rome fell in class and have the students compare it with that of where we are at regarding the US. It is an interesting idea as the students have not usually considered what could take down the United States of America.

- 7. DEMOCRATIC DEVELOPMENTS This is a slide show I put together to explain how feudalism was a response to the fall of Rome. This also discusses the role of William the Conqueror, Common Law and Henry II, quarrels within the church and the Magna Carta, and a limited monarchy.

This is more of an overview than an in depth study of the above topics. The book we use only dedicates one section to the discussion of all of these topics. I thought this is a good way to connect them with that of Rome.

- 8. THE RISE OF FEUDALISM This is a great lesson that covers many of the time periods my book skips over.

Here is the list of topics covered: Charlemagne, Vikings, Feudalism, Knights, Crusades, Magna Carta, Black Death Castles.

I have the students take notes on a blank sheet of paper which they fold into 8 squares. Each square must have a picture in it with 5 bullet notes. Sometimes I have the students take a quiz on what they wrote but other times we just go over the highlights in class of what they were reading about.

- 9. SPECIAL BONUS I will include my test and answer key and review sheet.

III. The Enlightenment:

- 1. ENLIGHTENMENT PRESENTATION My introduction PPT will be in Keynote and PPT format, so that you may adjust anything that you like. I have my students take Cornell notes during the presentation which is more of a slideshow/discussion. It is 28 slides long and takes 2 days to complete. I really feel this is the best way to look at the Enlightenment thinkers in chronological order focusing on the key contribution of each thinker. The PPT goes over the following Enlightenment thinkers: Niccolo Machiavelli, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Baron de Montesquieu, Denis Diderot, Voltaire, Mary Wollstonecraft, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Simon Bolivar.

- 2. ENLIGHTENMENT DIAGRAM This is a basic introduction diagram to the Enlightenment. It will take a look at a few of the key players and essential questions of the Enlightenment. (10 MINUTES AT MOST)

- 3. ENLIGHTENMENT MUSIC This is a fantastic lesson that focuses on the music/art of the Enlightenment. I have included the sheet that I have students fill in while I go over this as well. There are 10 slides with this KEYNOTE and I did include the videos. (takes about a day to teach and is really fun for the students)

On the last slide of this presentation I show the famous evolution of dance video from The link will be below.

- 4. ENLIGHTENMENT SOCIAL CONTRACT ASSIGNMENT This is a fun lesson where the students get to create their own rules to help create a bill of rights or social contract to show the importance of trying to work out a set of rules that everyone agrees on. This lesson takes approximately one class and is assuming that the teaching portion of this has already been done.

- 5. ENLIGHTENMENT FAIR PROJECT We have done this project as individual teachers and as a World History department. Each group of 3-4 students picks one of the philosophers and does full research on their Enlightenment thinker. It works best before the Enlightenment fair to have the students present their findings. I give EC if the students dress up and really get into their thinker. I also give the students 2 days in class to work on this project and really make sure they are either doing research or working on their presentation board. I have included the rubric as well as the project sheet.

- 6. ENLIGHTENMENT SHORT MOVIE This is 7 minutes long but does a good job of summarizing the Enlightenment. Feel free to use it in the PPT or just show it separately.

- 7. ENLIGHTENMENT VOCAB I do not have the key but will put this up once I get back to school in the fall. I am including it as a bonus as it goes over 9 words that I think are important to the Enlightenment. The best way to do this is have the students say the word with you and write down the definition which is to be said in class out loud by the teacher.

- 8. ENLIGHTENMENT /AMERICAN REVOLUTION JOHN GREEN EPISODE This is a stand a lone episode focusing more on the American Revolution than anything else.

- 9. TCI READING I am not going to include this but will be recommending this for the reading section on the Enlightenment. It is absolutely fantastic, I cannot include it in this but you may be able to google it or if you have TCI stuff at your school go and find it. If you email me I can send a link to TCI as I do not want to get copyright issues for selling anything that is not mine.

- 10. ENLIGHTENMENT THINKER CHART This chart can be given as a stand alone for the students to use their books or can be gone over with the teacher. I do not have the key for it with me as I will have to upload it later as it is at my school computer. It is a great resource for the majority of the thinkers from the Enlightenment.

- 11. ENLIGHTENMENT NEWSLETTER PROJECT This is a short project for the individuals or groups of 2 to do. It can be done on a computer or on a blank sheet of paper.

This project is simple and probably could use some expansion but the idea is sound. Would love to hear any feedback or other ideas to make this project even better.

- 12. ENLIGHTENMENT TEST/QUIZZES This is my test and review sheet.

- 13. ENLIGHTENMENT CLOSE READING ASSIGNMENT I am including the PPT/Keynote with this as I think it makes it really clear for the students doing the work. The close reading freebee below goes really well with this assignment.

- 14. BONUS Government sheet as a gift for downloading this BUNDLE!

IV. The French Revolution

- 1. STORMING THE BASTILLE ACTIVITY I typically start the French Revolution off with a short concept attainment on Revolution and Constitution. I also go over the different estates and how they fit into the kingdom of the time.

After my short presentation I read them the story of the storming of the Bastille with all the students heads down and lights out.

- 2. FRENCH REVOLUTION 58 SLIDE POWERPOINT I have broken the French Revolution into 4 stages to make it easy for students to remember what is happening. The stages are the Moderate, Reign of Terror, Reactionary and Napoleonic Stage. This presentation will cover everything in the Revolution and can be done individually or as a class.

- 3. TENNIS COURT VIDEO This is just a cool video of Roger Federer and Andre Agassi playing tennis in Dubai. It really has nothing to do with the French Revolution other than it is just fun. It may help the students remember the Tennis Court Oath, but that is about it.

- 4. VALUES LINE CONSERVATIVES VS. LIBERALSThis is a Values line lesson that I love love! It takes the students through the difference between a conservative and liberal and really shows them where they stand on some current real issues.

This is a great little writing assignment that reinforces everything that was gone over in the French Revolution PPT. This is a 4 paragraph essay that gives the students some freedom but also keeps them very much focused on what they are supposed to be focused on.

I would recommend using my FREE paragraph sheet download in addition to this assignment. I like to have students fill out at least 2 of these and then the other 2 paragraphs are on their own. ( I have included this in the download to save time)

- 6. DECLARATION OF RIGHTS OF MAN COMPARE/CONTRAST This is a lesson I did with my students in groups of 2 after I had finished explaining the Moderate Stage of the French Revolution. I had the students look at the documents and break down the differences in the documents. After they finished each person in the class had to compare or contrast the 2 documents in a paragraph. I have attached my paragraph sheet as a bonus for buying this lesson. I have included the key and the documents in this lesson. It worked out for a one day lesson and I gave the students 2 days to write the paragraph.

V. The Industrial Revolution

- 1. AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION 11 slide presentation to intro the Industrial Revolution. I have also included a short video to help visualize life before the AR.

- 2. INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION PART I 21 slides that focuses on the inventions of the IR.I have included a PDF sheet to take notes on and a reading HW assignment for outside or in class.

- 3. INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION PART II: 38 slides that goes through everything else regarding the social impact of the IR..

- 4. IR SIMULATION This is a fun simulation that is your basic factory simulation so that students can understand factory life. I got this for free from UCI.

- 5. IR READING Industrial Revolution reading to be done at home or in class and can be gone over. It really discusses some of the working conditions of the IR.

- 6. DBQ Industrial Revolution DBQ. Not much to this other than research and writing. Feel free to take a look at some of my DBQ resources.

- 7 IR WORKSHEETIndustrial Revolution worksheet to be done in class. This is very traditional and is fill in the blank and define vocab.

- 8 PROJECTThis is a great project that allows students to look at whether the IR was good or bad.

- 9. IR QUIZZES AND TESTS Industrial Revolution tests and review sheet.

- 10. GOVERNMENTS Types of governments sheet. This can be used as HW or in class.

VI. Imperialism

- 1. THE AFRICA PPT is a great way to introduce students to the concept of Imperialism. I give them the definition and then have them watch a short clip of Iron Man pointing out what is and what is not imperialism in the movie clip. The presentation is an introduction in the general sense to who was involved, what were they after and how it was going. The PPT is 14 slides and can be completed in one period.

- 2. VIDEO CLIPS I have included some other short video clips that would work really well on Day 1 or any other day you need a 5 minute summary of what is being studied.

- 3. CHINA AND JAPAN PPT is a short 13 slides and is more of a comparison and contrast of how Japan and China dealt with Imperialism in the 1800's. I do not have any video for this one as it is quick and to the point.

- 4. INDIA PPT is a 12 slide account of what was going on in India in the 1800's. I have included a clip of Indiana Jones to show the differences between the West and India. The students love it as it really shows how weaponry is king from this time period forward.

- 5. GHOST IN THE DARKNESS I really enjoy showing this movie in class as the students are just riveted by what goes on in Africa at the time. It shows the struggles of Imperialism and the difficulties of working with other groups of people from all over the world.

The movie is not a free download as it cost 2.99 on Amazon to rent and 9.99 to own.

- 6. WORKSHEET This is a one day Imperialism worksheet that I do not have the key for. I am not sure where it is as I have looked everywhere. I am so sorry.

- 7. CHARLES DARWIN READING This is a short 10-15 minute reading on Charles Darwin and his contribution to the time period. It can be done as a closed reading highlighting things that are important or as a stand alone in class reading.

- 8. WHITE MAN"S BURDEN This is a classic and disturbing view on how the White man, at the time, viewed other races and how they fit together into society. It is kinda long but I feel it is good for the students to read and understand the mindset at the time.

- 9. BONUS I & II I have included the test I use with the unit as well with the answer key. Feel free to use it or ditch it.

-10. FINAL I will be also including the FINAL and the FINAL review sheet.

or if you really want all my reading and writing stuff:

This makes writing so much easier when you have a proper template to have them write to.

After I have taught it and launched my writing assignment we will watch 2 videos on class. I have the students take notes on both of them to make sure they are guided with their watching and that they are not just zoning out.

- 5 I have the students watch this in its entirety as it does the best job of showing and explaining Mussolini's career and life. This is the 2nd clip from youtube as the first one got taken down so I will include that as I downloaded it before it got removed from youtube.

- 6. Another great video, The Roots of Evil, that allows the students to have more information for their 2 paragraphs. I have the students take notes on this one as well.

- 7. Totalitarian HW Assignment
If for some reason you are feeling that the students need some more work to do and that they are not getting it after doing all of the above I have made an additional HW assignment that is 4 pages in length and does a really good job of making sure they know who is who before going into WWII.

The last bonus that I will include is a bunch of fun facts about Hitler and his regime. I will also include a reading Stalin vs. Hitler.

This is just a fun video

A good way just to get a sense of where everything is.

- 3. PPT: 62 slide PDF PowerPoint of 4-5 days of direct or flipped classroom instruction. I have my students take notes in Cornell style during this presentation. This presentation is very visual and is a wonderful way to walk the students through the war. I have them take Cornell notes while the presentation is going.
