If you want your students to understand how to convert a quadratic from standard form to completed square form, this pack is for you!
1. Warm-Up Activities
Before students can understand the phrase 'completing the square' they need to be able to write expressions to describe the area of shapes. This pack includes Linking Algebra to Area
, a pack of activities to help students write expressions, multiply polynomials and factor quadratics. There is also a pack of warm-up cards on factoring quadratics.
2. Lesson 1: Square Quadratics
This lesson is designed to help students become fluent at recognising when quadratics can be written in the form (x+a)^2 and to understand that, visually, they form perfect squares. Includes PowerPoint + Worksheet.
3. Lesson 2: Completing The Square
This lesson is aimed at helping students see that all quadratics can be thought of in terms of a perfect square and can therefore be written in the form (x + a)^2 + b. Includes PowerPoint + Worksheet.
4. Consolidation + Extension
Also included are activities for further practise which would make a great homework as they are easy to check at a glance. There is also a worksheet to help link completing the square to finding the vertex of the quadratic graph.
