Struggling with fragments? Commas after introductory clauses? Creating complex sentences? This kinesthetic activity is designed to force students to create complex sentences and avoid fragments. The activity is simple: form two facing lines with one side having independent clauses and the other dependent. Have them read these clauses aloud, flip the clauses, and put the comma in the right place. One line sends someone down (think "Soul Train"), and the line shifts. Students keep going until all complex sentences have been created. Students then find their "natural partner" and read the complex sentences aloud, once with the independent clause first and once with the dependent. The sentences are funny, and students get to move!
