Students who think about a number in terms of its parts have come to a major milestone in developing number sense. Composing & Decomposing Numbers with Number Bonds (sums through 10)
provides learning opportunities for:
- Recognizing the inverse relationships between sets of numbers
- Practicing multiple ways to decompose and compose the same number
- Becoming a flexible mathematician as strategies for solving problems are strengthened
- Taking numbers apart and putting them back together prepares students for double digit addition and subtraction, as well as fractions, elapsed time, and measurement!
These activities also provide lots of room for differentiation opportunities, small group work, whole class work, or use in a learning center or math station.
The Number Bonds
packet includes “Key Facts About Number Bonds”, “Preparing the Number Bond Materials”, “Using the Number Bond Materials”, and three different kinds of activities with 5 different sums included. You add two-color counters. Included are “Number Bond Mats”, “Color-Coded Flash Cards” with sums through 10 labeled “part-part-whole”, “whole unknown”, and “part unknown”, and “Shake and Spill Game Boards” with sums to ten.
