Composing with Kids | Five "Recipes" for Success by Andrew Fling
About This Edition
Composing music is a lot like baking cookies. If you want to bake a certain type of cookie, you have to include a certain set of ingredients. The same is true with composing music.
In this edition students will be given five "recipes" to help them get started with composing pieces with a variety of "flavors." The projects require no understanding of music theory, with the exception of a few basic piano reading/performance skills.
Table of Contents
Hot Cross Buns Remix
Walk Like an Egyptian
Ostinato, Ostinato, Ostinato
Ragtime Mix and Match
Each "Recipe" limits students to a small collection of musical elements, and provides instruction on how to combine them:
Rhythms: Whole, Half and Quarter Note
Notes: The Egyptian Scale
Length: ABA Form/24 Measures
Other: Left Hand Ostinato (Provided)
Note from Andy
I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Music Composition before taking an interest in music education. It thrills me to be able to combine those two "loves" in a book for kids. I hope you and your students will enjoy composing a few pieces together from the "recipes" in my book, as much as I enjoy creating it!
