This is a worksheet to guide a composition activity. I use this with my second grade students as a way of introducing composition, as well as reinforcing the role of various pitches and their functions within a scale. In this case, it is based on the pentatonic scale. Students use crayons or colored pencils to fill in boxes, each of which is worth one beat. Boxes are grouped into sets of four, with four lines available. Compositions can be made out of each set of four, each line of eight, pairs of lines, or the entire set of sixteen boxes. After coloring in their composition, they are to play it for a partner, then reflect on their composition and evaluate if they would like to change anything. A smaller set is provided at the end to allow for revision.
