Before we went to writing a single paper as a composition class, our English Department had revised the Composition 12 class to meet Common Core Standards while still using the same papers we'd been using for a decade. Basically, this download represents the last effort to continue using papers that had been mostly successful before going to a single-paper format.
There are advantages to having 9 units and 9 separate papers. You might be realizing this because you've tried writing one paper with your students. I never taught that version, but it honestly seemed like the students did less work over the semester. If you are looking for a class, laid out in units and approximate dates, with some description of the papers and some samples, this will work for you. It's not as detailed as my creative writing assignments, but it can satisfy your school's academic writing goals.
Here are the units in the document: Unit 1 (6 days*): Warm-Up Writings—
Unit 2 (7-8 days): Who Am I? (2 pages)
Unit 3 (5 days): College Application Essay
Unit 4 (10 days): “Convince Me” (2+ pages)
Unit 5 (20 days): Research-Based Argument (4-5 pages)
Unit 6 (10 days): Personal Narrative (3-5 pages)
Unit 7 (10 days): Explain It!/Inform Me! (2-3 pages)
Unit 8 (3-4 days): Business Writing: resume, cover letter, letter of complaint, memo, thank you letter, . . .
Unit 9 (13 or so days): Creative Writing: a One Act Play (10 pages)
Most units are left mostly up to the teacher to figure out, but the outline is there with enough guidance for most educators. Educabana has an excellent version of the research paper if you need a template for it.
If you need a new composition class, become the hero of your department by downloading this class in a file.
