Conjunctions act like GLUE to make two smaller sentences into one longer and better developed compound sentence. Use if, and, but, so, because - called the GLUE WORDS to write super sentences.
The first worksheet will guide the student with examples and opportunities to practice how to use a conjunction to develop their compound sentence writing.
The additional worksheets are 8 half page quick practice activities that allow students to use conjunctions with the given sentences and also to create their own compound sentences using a self-selected conjunction/glue word. These can be used as an early morning review or homework practice.
When introducing this skill for the first time, have a bottle of squirt glue handy! While modeling for the students use the closed bottle of glue - with teacher-supplied "squirting sound", to make the point that the conjunction is gluing the two smaller sentences together. Use this prop as the lesson continues to help students remember the conjunction's purpose.
