Compound Word Creations are easy ways for your students to learn the meaning of compound words by first learning the meaning of the individual words. Your students will have a great time discovering the meaning of compound words in this hands-on activity!
Directions: Print and cut out the compound word cards and pictures. If placing in a center, you may want to limit how many words and pictures are available if students are struggling to find words to create the compound word. There are enough pictures to create all of the compound words. However, some may be tricky and not create the correct meaning which boys and girls will think is funny when they picture a car swimming in a pool for example! Students can draw their own pictures on the blank cards if they cannot find the picture they are looking for, or to help them create the meaning of the compound word.
I have also included sheets that they can glue the cards to if you so choose.
Use knowledge of the meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of compound words (e.g., birdhouse, lighthouse, housefly; bookshelf, notebook, bookmark).
