There are 3 steps to this compound word lesson. I developed this because many of my students are ESL learners and when they were asked to match compound words, they didn't know where to to start because they didn't even recognize that something like "cupcake" was a word.
There are 3 steps, but you don't have to use all of them. There are instructions for use with all three steps.
Step 1: Familiarizing with the vocab by matching words with pictures. This step is to see what your students already know and what they don't know. The cards should be cut and laminated for matching.
Step 2: Producing the language. This step allows the student to cut out the picture and write the vocabulary beneath. This practice shows that the student has acquired the vocabulary and can produce it on his/her own.
Step 3: Matching root words to form compound words. This step is the actual introduction of what a compound word is. You have "Root Word" headings and then a "Compound Word" heading to help demonstrate. The children match the root words together and then write it as a compound word in their notebooks.
