Compound Words ~ Say It Again Cards
These cards are designed to support students’ listening skills as they learn about compound words. This set includes over 100 compound word cards and a page of blank templates on which students can add their own cards to the deck.
Each card is formatted as follows:
Sat it again,
but don't say out.
I like to introduce the cards whole group, then have partners play during a literacy center. Partners place the deck of cards, face down, in between them. They take turns picking the top card, reading it, and checking their partner’s answer.
This is also a great listening activity for students who are not yet reading the words independently. Just partner the child who needs support with a helper. The helper reads the card while they listen and respond. Then, I encourage the pair to chorally read the card together.
In introducing these cards, I reinforce the importance of clearly pronouncing words so their partner can repeat after them. Long and short vowel patterns, digraphs and common word parts were intentionally included.
I find that kids like the predictability and rhythm of this game. For fluency practice, partners can set a timer for one minute and see how many cards they can complete in that time.
Thanks for stopping by and taking a look!
Sincerely, Anne Gardner (NBCT, Literacy)
