SPRING ANIMAL Compound Words- A thematic way to get your students breaking down compound words!
Two Pages of Word Work!
Page 1 Words: bluebird (example), bullfrog, cottontail, newborn
Page 2: Customizable page!
For Page 2 Teachers Could...
*write in words and copy the worksheet for all students.
*write in words for specific students (groups of students) for individualized / differentiated work.
*allow students to write in compound words. (Word Hunt: Students could "hunt" in books to find compound words.)
This could easily be a literacy center activity and encourages dictionary practice! Students could use a physical or online dictionary to assist them. Many words can be figured out by looking at the two words that make up the compound word.
**Meets Common Core Standards for Second Grade**
Use knowledge of the meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of compound words (e.g., birdhouse, lighthouse, housefly; bookshelf, notebook, bookmark).
