This organizer has kids BUSTing open word problems. The B stands for begin by reading the problem. The kids read and reread to better understand what is being asked. The U stands for understand the problem. In this step, kids "code" the problem by identifying key words, the numbers they'll use, and operation words. The S stands for steps and solve, where they list the steps they'll take to solve the problem and actually solve it. To help list the steps, I have my kids draw a tape diagram to help decide what to do. The T stands for think and check. The kids have to look at the answer statement and decide if it's reasonable before they check themselves. This organizer focuses not on the actual answer, but is used within a reading station to show the comprehension of the word problems.
