Use these discussion cards to provide cues to the reader as to possible comments that they might make. Each student or small group has a set of cards made specifically for narrative or expository text. I have included a set of cards for each type of text. These cards have been used for independent literature circle discussions.
The student holds up a card to indicate what she or he wants to talk about. The student may make any comment they want as long as they can tie it into one of their cards.
If the comment not related to the text, the inability to attach a card indicates this. The discussion cards suggest topics for students’ comments and they also keep the discussion focused on the text.
