This product is slideshow to help introduce your readers to 8 comprehension skills essential to reading: making connections, summarizing, inferring, synthesizing, evaluating, predicting, clarifying, and questioning. There are 8 characters with their descriptions, as well as sentence starters to go with each. You can project this or print it and post it somewhere in the room. I use these to introduce comprehension skills at the beginning of the year, to post on the CAFE wall, and to put in students' browsing boxes/reading bags to use as a reference all year long! These characters are based off of what I learned at a Smekens conference and from a book I purchased there called Interactive Think-Aloud Lessons: 25 Surefire Ways to Engage Students and Improve Comprehension by Lori Oczkus. I have my own toolbox with real versions of these characters' tools to use in conjunction with this PowerPoint. You can also paste the sentence stems into student journals to aid them with writing about their reading during Daily 5 or centers in your 90 minute reading block/ Reading Workshop! These comprehension skills meet Common Core State Standards, too!
