This simple comprehension chart for Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" allows students to track five elements - setting, characters, plot, conflict, and theme. This chart can be completed by students individually, in small groups, or through whole-class instruction. Collect these at the end of class, or have students complete them for homework. You also get a blank chart for use with any short story!
For higher-performing students, consider eliminating the bold-face prompts.
Have you tried Escape Rooms? Here's one for Romeo & Juliet!
My students also love these Team Trivia Bellringers
