You are trying to teach the Declaration of Independence -- either as part of your curriculum in American history, government, civics or as part of "Celebrate Freedom Week" -- but the text is too difficult for your students? Check out this lesson plan!
This lesson applies the multi-step "Comprehension Instructional Sequence" to the Declaration of Independence to scaffold students' understanding of this complex but important document.
In this lesson, students apply the Comprehension Instructional Sequence to gain a deeper understanding of the Declaration of Independence; dissect and analyze the text of the Declaration of Independence through multiple close readings; and use text marking and directed note taking to categorize and evaluate colonists’ expressed reasons for declaring independence.
This lesson is aligned with Common Core and NCSS (National Council for the Social Studies) Standards.
This lesson includes accommodations for English Language Learners (ESOL, ESL, ELL), Exceptional Education (ESE, SE), and gifted (GTP, GAT) students.
