The ELA Common Core State Standards require our students to be strategic readers who are able to accurately and thoughtfully read a passage, then answer questions or discuss the material not only at the literal level, but by integrating information found in the text with prior knowledge or other text with related content, using specific information from the text to support main ideas and conclusions.
With this type of “close reading” in mind, I developed a series of Christmas themed short passages with which students can begin thinking about what information is IN the passage, as well as what information the author would like us to INFER from the passage, then answer and discuss related statements given as “true”, “false”, or “don’t know.”
This product includes 10 passages with a “Christmas/Holiday” theme-some realistic fiction and some fantasy. (Please take a look at the preview for examples) The passages vary in length, but none of them is more than one page long. Following the passage you will find a set of six true/false/don’t know statements. The students should:
• Label each statement with “t”, “f”, or “don’t know”
• Highlight or underline each statement that is marked true or false with a :
-green marker if the statement is supported by “literal” (or close to exact) text
-blue marker if “making an inference” or “drawing a conclusion” was required to determine if the statement was true or false.
An answer key with highlighting is provided, however many of the statements could be considered “inference” or “literal” depending on, for example, whether paraphrased or sentences with synonyms should be considered “literal”-these are good questions for you and your class to decide, so the answer key is only a GUIDELINE.
After each passage is read and the true/false is completed, teacher guided group discussion with “think aloud” modeling is important when using these stories. However, reading the passages can be done a number of ways. Some ideas include:
• bell-ringer activity
• independent work during your literacy block
• partner or buddy reading
• completed during guided reading (especially for those children who need support)
However you decide to use the passages, I believe that you will see an improvement in your students’ ability to think critically about what they read. I have found (and I bet you agree) that ten minutes a day with consistent instruction results in a higher number of students meeting or exceeding learning outcomes than using similar material for instruction once a week for 45-60 minutes.
