Short films are perfect for helping your students understand comprehension skills, especially focusing in on such concepts as theme, main idea, mood, and inferential skills.
One of the best parts of most short films is that there are no words. Students truly need to use inferential-type skills to discover the true meaning of the films.
Included in this packet are 6 award-winning short film links (these are on Youtube, so make sure you have access.
Students will first watch the short film, after which you will have students take notes using the page provided, and then have students answer the 5 comprehension questions that are include based on the video.
The videos used in this packet as the center of these lesson are as follows:
*Ormie the Pig
*The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore
*Home Sweet Home
Just FYI...my kids needed major practice with mood, main idea, and theme, so some of the questions that are included on each of the comprehension pages are the same across all videos (as they need repeated practice). For example, one of the questions that I gave my kids for every lesson was:
"How did the overall mood change from the beginning of the video until the end?"
If your kids are similar to mine, they will LOVE these lessons. They are great when you just need a quick break from usual lessons, but are still some of the most powerful lessons I have ever taught.
