PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The National Reading Panel (NRP) and What Works Clearing House (WWCH) have filtered through hundreds of studies and identified categories of instruction that have a firm scientific basis for improving reading comprehension. Some of the types of instruction can be helpful when used alone, however, many are considered more effective when used as part of a multi-strategy approach. They are:
1. Comprehension Monitoring
2. Cooperative Learning
3. Use of Graphic Organizers
4. Question Answering
5. Question Generating
6. Story Structure
7. Summarization

Our Comprehension Skill Building resource is in alignment with NRP and WWCH suggestions as well as the Common Core Standards.

National Institute for Reading suggests that effective comprehension strategy instruction is explicit. (See Gradual Increase of Student Responsibility)

We recommend that you use our Note Catchers and Analysis pages (See Write, Share, Compare for the Analysis pages) with any text you are reading, not just during reading time, but in the content areas as well!

As you begin to employ the practices in your class and students get the hang of the strategies/activities, you can use them for independent practice. Mix it up — use these with small groups, the whole class, during partner reading, literacy stations, etc.
