As you know, reading comprehension skills and strategies must be explicitly taught and intentionally practiced in order for growing readers to apply them to more complex text. This resource is designed to help your students do just that: practice a specific comprehension skill using an easily accessible text. The packet includes ten passages plus an anchor chart for teaching and practicing the skill. Use as a mini-lesson, small group lesson, or intervention for struggling readers. The passages are designed for third grade level students but could be used with higher second graders or struggling fourth graders.
Display the poster/anchor chart as you introduce the skill. Tell students they can put this skill in their toolbox of reading skills/strategies to use with future texts! Addresses Common Core informational text standards:
RI.2.2 Identify the main topic of a multi paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.
RI.3.2 Determine the main idea of a text, recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.
Pages can be used as practice with this standard or as an assessment to monitor and document student mastery of the standard. Use as documentation for a standards-based report card, for inclusion in student data binders, or to show progress and student growth with this specific skill/standard. Great tool to use as an intervention for students struggling with this specific skill.
Perfect resource to begin preparing students for constructed response and the kind of writing to demonstrate learning necessary on standardized state tests.
