The “Before, When, and after Reading” comprehension strategies are appropriate for grades 3rd-8th and beyond. With scaffolding and support, some of the strategies can be introduced in K-2nd, during the teacher reading aloud, modeling, and small group guided reading.
The selected “Before, When, and After Reading” strategies can be a lesson focus, along with the aligned Common Core Standards for comprehension. The strategies are to be modeled, used with group and individual text reading, and included in the introduction, reading, and discussion of a new text. When taught, mastered, and applied, the strategies have lifelong utility in reading and comprehending any text on any subject and for enjoyment. With use of these comprehension strategies, watch your students’ text engagement, reading independence, text understanding, and concept learning improve!
(A comprehension “Before, When, and After Reading” bookmark that complements the charts will be provided as a separate material for independent student reading anytime and anywhere.)
