Teach your students to be true reading detectives with this complete comprehension unit!
We know how vital comprehension is to our reading ability, but students must be shown how to comprehend what they read. I believe that to truly teach comprehension, students must experience strategy use firsthand. This unit provides opportunities to gradually release control over strategies to the students. It breaks comprehension down into bite-sized pieces and introduces strategies in a simple, relatable, thematic way.
This unit is packed full of posters, bookmarks, activities, and printables to use when introducing and practicing comprehension strategies 'before, during, and after reading'. Each strategy is associated with a detective tool that will help students relate to the strategy.
Predicting: looking ahead with our detective binoculars
Visualizing: picture it with our detective camera
Questioning: ask questions with our detective questions
Making connections: make connections with our detective handcuffs
Inferencing: make inferences with our detective clues
Identifying the main idea: zoom in on the main idea with our magnifying glass
Making judgements (forming opinions): jot down your ideas & opinions in your detective notebook
Retelling and Summarizing: follow the sequencing footprints and retell the story in your detective walkie talkie
Each strategy included has both a full color and black and white poster and 2 printable pages that can be used with any story. Please see the preview for more information.
The printable strategy pages would be PERFECT for use during Daily 5, literature response journals, homework, guided reading, and responding to read alouds! I am so excited to use the new improved version this unit this year in my own classroom.
Please let me know if you have any questions about the unit.
