This packet contains everything you need to create your own "Comprehension Toolbox" to help students "construct" and "repair" their comprehension as they read.
8 Comprehension Tools
-Go Back & Reread (hammer)
-Adjust Your Reading Rate (lens)
-Make a Connection (pin)
-Make a Prediction (pliers)
-Ask a Question (screwdriver)
-Retell What You Read (wrench)
I also included 2 forms to help your students track how they are building and repairing their comprehension. The first form is a checklist of the different comprehension tools so the students can tally how often they use a specific strategy during their independent reading. The second form can be used if a student is struggling with comprehension and needs to determine WHY his/her comprehension is breaking down. Both of these forms would be perfect for Read to Self, individual reading conferences and for students working on Comprehension on the CAFE menu.
*Note: After laminating and cutting out the tools, I attached them to a few sheets of laminated polka dot scrapbook paper using Velcro dots. This way I can take off the tool I want to use to help my students focus in on a specific strategy!
Let me know how you use them in your classroom!
