This product is a must-have if you are a new teacher or a veteran! This includes the seven comprehension strategies BUT I have created strategy cards for individual student use. Students can use these cards while reading to remind them of what to do if their reading breaks down or if you want them to practice a certain strategy. The cards are written in the first person and give helpful hints to the reader and prompts along the way.
The posters are 8 ½ x 11 inches with black and white polka dots and include the definition of the strategy, what good readers do and thinking stems to help support the reader. This would be ideal on a bulletin board after you have taught and modeled each one.
An example of what is said on the posters is as follows:
Making Connections-Making connections to link prior knowledge and experience to support comprehension;
Make text to self, text to text, text to world connections
Use what they already know to anticipate and understand what they are reading
This reminds me of…
This reminds me of the book…
This reminds me of something I heard…
This is just like…
On the strategy card for kids:
When I am reading, I need to be thinking:
Does this remind me of something I’ve read before?
Has something like this happened to me before?
Have I heard of this or seen this somewhere else? On television? On the Internet? In a movie? On the news?
The bonus in this product is that I have added possible ways to teach the strategies. This, by no means, is an exhaustive list but I gathered my own tips and tips from others around the internet. I also included my top favorite go-to resources for teaching comprehension strategies. They are a MUST HAVE for any teacher of literacy!!
Because we all have a range of readers in our classrooms, all grade levels can benefit from this product!
Thanks so much for stopping by!
