Comprehension Chips … Betcha can’t ask just one …
Reading Comprehension Strategies - Reading Response Questions
Add a little fun to your reading response questions with these Comprehension Chips for the Reading Comprehension Strategies. This resource contains 135 different reading response questions to check for comprehension during guided reading activities, read alouds, shared reading activities, partner discussions … virtually any way you already use reader response questions. You can use them for oral discussions or written responses.
There are 5 different “sets” of questions related to the different story elements - plot, character, setting, theme, and conflict. Each set contains 27 questions written on chips. Each set also has a corresponding chip bag (labelled on the front). Assemble the chip bags according to the assembly directions (included on next page) and place chips inside. Each set also contains a set of blank chips so you (or your students) can write in your own questions. I have also created an extra bag, simply labelled “Comprehension Chips” in case you want to mix up the questions and place them all inside, instead of using them as different sets.
- The teacher can choose a few chips and display them for discussion starters for partner or small group discussions.
- The teacher can choose a few chips and display them to offer some choice for students for written reader response answers.
- The teacher can choose one chip at a time to ask the class questions as part of a whole group discussion.
- Students can take a bag of chips to their guided reading group and use it to pose questions to other students.
Reading IS fun … and these comprehension chips help making learning fun.
