The goal of a literacy teacher is to create thoughtful readers who monitor their own reading and make adjustments to comprehend a text no matter what grade level or reading level at which the student is working.
Students must be reflective about their own process of reading and what is going on in their heads as they process text. If we want children to be reflective, we must provide them with opportunities to explain in writing how they process text and why.
With that in mind, here are 30 comprehension strategy exit slips to use with readers. You could use these as open ended whole class discussion prompts. However, having students put their thoughts about their own reading process into writing is a powerful tool for teachers to use to drive their whole group and small group instruction, as well as, conferring points.
This is by no means a complete list but it is a starting point. These could be used over and over throughout the year to show student progress and development.
