This unit focuses on the comprehension strategy of making connections. It is based on the ideas in Reading with Meaning by Debbie Miller and Strategies that Work by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis. Comprehension strategies are taught one at a time, however, they are also taught to intertwine. Therefore, while focusing on connections, teachers should examine how it relates to comprehension strategies already taught and how they can use what they know to go deeper into the text.
The texts in this unit have been selected with a recurring theme (accepting differences). The lessons go through the gradual release of responsibility (modeling, guided practice, collaborative practice, with independent practice at teacher discretion) in relation to several objectives. This unit includes two sample charts: One used for teacher modeling, and another that was created with third grade students, This unit also contains recording sheets to match the lessons and for students to use for independent practice.
This unit also embeds examining characteristics of fairy tales and analyzing depth and complexity.
