I hope you will enjoy this as much as my students have. I compiled a list of songs popular during the time I was growing up in the 1960's and 1970's. Students analyze the lyrics to answer Common Core-friendly comprehension questions. Afterwards, they listen and watch 1-2 videos of the song. For most songs, there is one video with just lyrics and one with the actual artist performing. The links to all the songs are at the end of the file. If you come across a link that is broken, please let me know. Many songs written during this era were "story songs" that can be used along with basic comprehension passages. After a number of songs are analyzed, the students have a chance to reflect on the ones they have recently listened to and make comparisons of what the lyrics are saying. Last year my 5th Grade students chose "Cherokee People" by Paul Revere and the Raiders as the background song to our graduation slide show. They tried to persuade me to sing "Signs" by Five Man Electric Band as the traditional song we sing at the end of the ceremony, but I had to veto that.
