These passages can be used to practice text based evidence reading. The packet contains 17 passages written using specific vowel patterns. Students practice reading fluency, blending and reading words, comprehension skills, and using the text to find answers. In each passage, there are three to four questions requiring students to look within the text and color the answer using a specific color. There are three versions of each story. The first version requires students to answer the questions by writing phrases on handwriting lines. The second version has the same questions, but has multiple choice answers. The third version requires students to use regular lines to write their answer in a complete sentence. A large copy of each story is also included.
I use these stories in my Kindergarten classroom. I use the multiple choice version at the beginning of the year, while students are still learning how to read and use the text to find answers. The versions that require writing are used later in the year when students can write independently. I also usually run off a handwriting sheet on the back for students to write three to four sentences about what they have read. This can be used in small group or a whole group setting.
The vowel patterns in this packet are
