Short story units are so fun! What's not fun is making individual reading guides for every short story we teach. This build your own reading guide is a great resource for anyone who is looking for a practical, reliable resource that students can use for any short story. It requires them to predict, summarize, make connections, ask questions, visualize, infer, and analyze. Terms like conflict, plot, and characterization are covered in addition to many others. Questions are aligned with Common Core Reading Literature Standards.
I have used the same reading guide with multiple short stories in the past when I wanted students to move from teacher-led instruction to small group or partner practice and then finally to independent work. The pages in this document would work well with any short story. Just select the pages you want students to focus on depending on their reading skill needs.
This reading guide has recently been updated, and it now contains twelve different pages for students to complete. These options give you differentiation abilities. They are perfect for modeling expectations, guiding class or small group discussions, brainstorming for a written response to literature, and more.
Happy reading, and please leave feedback! I love hearing how teachers use materials in their classrooms.
