With the CLAQET method, I came up with a comprehensive way to teach the majority of comma rules. This became so popular with fellow writing teachers, the entire middle school language arts department decided to adopt my Writing Whiz program. In this packet, I've included the CLAQET rules -- which cover compound sentences, commas in list, multiple adjectives with commas, quotations and commas, extra information (or non-essential phrases), and finally transitional words and phrases with commas -- which is the category I created for complex sentences or any sentences with introductory elements. In addition to the general rules, I've included worksheets, quizzes, and answer sheets. I strongly recommend that you introduce CLAQET rules early in the year and keep coming back to identify them in passages and have students create their own sentences that demonstrate certain rules. In this packet, I've focused on certain rules, as students seems to struggle with them more. When teaching CLAQET, I also pull in the FANBOYS mnemonic device to teach them their conjunctions and ABBI SAW A WUWU to teach complex sentences that begin with transitional phrases. Good luck. I hope you find this program as useful as I have.
