Are you often in need of “just a little something”…either a quick check on math skills or a quick homework sheet or a quick review? Are you and your coworkers being asked to conserve paper use? Same here!
I have gotten into the habit of giving out “mini math” to solve all of these problems! The students love them—they make math less threatening and overwhelming, save time, and can give teachers a quick snapshot of progress which can be used to guide instruction!
When I give these for homework, we literally tape them right into their assignment notebooks so they don’t get lost, and when I use them as “exit slips” students hand them to me on their way out the door. I quickly grade them and then can form review groups for the next day!
This set of mini math focuses on basic addition and subtraction problems (3 -5 digits) and addition and subtraction of money—all key skills in the Common Core and other rigorous state standards. This is also an excellent way to encourage students to work on their accuracy and precision—as required by the Standards for Mathematical Practice! These really are a fast and easy way for students to “show they know”.
I hope you find it helpful! Simply cut each page into quarters after copying. You will notice that problems are written horizontally. This is deliberate; students need to be independent at lining up the different “places” in numbers without us doing it for them! Please do provide them with instruction in this—and ask them to rewrite them vertically to show their understanding! Students can do their work on the front or back of the sheets. This set includes 6 sheets of addition problems, 6 sheets of subtraction problems, 6 sheets of adding/subtracting money problems, and 6 sheets of “mixed” problems. (24 total sheets!) Answer key included.
