Updated May 2016: Are you looking for ways to improve your computer science curriculum to ensure it develops the appropriate technology skills your students need to succeed in a world that demands digital media competency? If so, this computer/technology curriculum package is the ideal resource for you. Since today’s students will be the future programmers and engineers of their day, a quality program should also provide children with opportunities to explore computer hardware and to learn about the history of and trends in technology. This package contains specific instructional objectives and lessons/activities organized into a weekly planning guide for 36 weeks with quarterly summaries and resource folders containing all of the student and teacher files needed to implement the curriculum for third grade. In addition, this package includes an outline of the full K through 6th grade curriculum that can be modified to fit the needs of individual schools and students. Separate grade-level packages for implementing this curriculum are available for grades one, two, three, four, five, and six. The lesson materials and resources are created for and provided in Microsoft Office format (and upper-grade lessons are heavily PC-based). I developed this program to meet the needs of my students over nearly a decade of teaching computer science to 4K through sixth grade because I never could find a good instructional manual, textbook, or comprehensive curriculum designed to teach relevant skills that could challenge students of all ability levels. These materials would also be great in a homeschool environment and could work with upper-grade students who are just learning computer science skills. This packet has been updated to work with (and even teach many components of) Windows 10. This is a very challenging curriculum that includes more activities and lessons than the typical student could do in a year without prior participation in a comprehensive program like the one I teach (outlined in this curriculum). However, it is one that your students will grow into each year as the foundation of digital literacy skills builds upon previous years’ accomplishments and learning.
