This is a full presentation for parents to help them understand our "new" problem-solving strategies and help their kids with their work, as we transition to the Common Core. So often, I have parents say things like, "I have NO idea what my child is doing with all those tally marks," or, "Why aren't you teaching the "up and down" (algorithm)?" We didn't learn to add and subtract this way and it's the #1 thing parents are confused about at conferences. I included a quick tips cheat sheet for parents as a take away. I've seen HUGE growth in my students whose parents attended the seminar. Their children are much stronger problem-solvers and are more flexible in their solving strategies!

The presentation includes easy-to-understand information on the continuum of learning for math students K-2 - how students move from concrete manipulatives to solving math in their heads. It includes an explanation slide on at least six different strategies for solving addition and subtraction with re-grouping and without, including base ten blocks, using a 100 chart, adding on a number line, and expanded form.

It could also be great for professional development as your state, county or school adopts Common Core!

This presentation covers standards in, Number and Base Ten (NBT 1.NBT and 2.NBT) and Operation and Algebraic Thinking (1.OA and 2.OA).
