In this unit you will get three different lessons to help teach your students about making meaningful connections! When I start to teach connection to my students, it is always apparent who knows how to make a deep and meaningful connection. If they say, "The characters name is the same name as my friend." Well then I know I have some work to do. Connections are supposed to help your students understand something beyond the text, it gives the text deeper meaning.
So I have put together 3 different lessons to help you do just that!
lesson 1: Has your students using text puzzles to understand not only what a connect is (literal meaning) but also how the text on the puzzle makes them feel (taking it beyond the text). I promise they will love decoding the secret message. There is a response sheet included.
Lesson 2: In this lesson your students will read a missing pet poster to understand how the words on the poster let you know what this person is feeling. If someone has ever lost something is/was important to them then they know just how this person feels. After this lesson your students will create a missing poster for their item!
Lesson 3: The last lesson starts to dive into the text from picture books. I provide a list of some books that I like to use. It goes over how you get students to make connections while they are reading.
There is also a response sheet for this activity.
As a little bonus I have also included posters for the 3 different types of connections. (Self, text and world) I usually don't teach these right off the bat, but wanted to provide them in case your students need to go there.
