Feeling lost about how to guide teenagers toward the sacrament of Confirmation? Trying to merge the ELA Common Core with religion? Wishing students had better reasons than mere coincidence for why they chose their particular saints?

This argumentative writing project is the culmination of three years of experience helping eighth graders prepare for Confirmation, plus my own transition to the CCSS. After this project, students could beautifully articulate a variety of reasons why their saint choices were personally relevant AND use researched evidence to back up their claims.

Whether you teach ELA, religion, or both, this project will meet your standards for argumentative writing; religion standards for specific content can easily be added, based on the religion course of study used in your parish or diocese.

Students first write a short, one-page essay listing all of their initial reasons for choosing the saint, no matter how coincidental or shallow. This first essay does NOT require research other than initial browsing. Later on, after more learning, research, or time has passed, students write the “After”/ “Part 2” essay, in which they explain why the saint is STILL or EVEN MORE wise for them. This essay does have light citation expectations, since students should use different, additional facts than what they said in the first essay.

The “Before” and “After” essays can be evidence of writing growth for portfolios or data gathering as well! I have also used them as pre- and post- assessments.

This 15-page download includes the following:
• A 5-page Teacher’s Guide that includes:
o Sample calendar of lesson sequencing
o Unit and lesson plan information, such as “I Can” statements and an Essential Question
o Tips to modify the project above or below Grade 8, including standards for grades 7-12
o Tips to differentiate the project within your class
o Suggested vocabulary to teach, with free online flash cards
o A list of “credible” saint websites to use during research (and bad ones to watch for)
• The “Part 1” or “Before” essay: a directions page, mastery rubric with ELA writing standards, and a sample essay you can critique as a class.
• The “Part 2” or “After” essay: a directions page, mastery rubric with ELA writing standards, and a sample essay you can critique as a class. The Part 2 essay also comes with a 2-page formative brainstorming/outlining handout to help jumpstart student thinking and structure their ideas more formally.

As a BONUS, this download also includes a short RESEARCH project to go “between” the essays! Use this to either jump-start or finish your research.
• Called “Where is my Saint today?”, it explores the long-term legacy of a saint as students act like historians and theologians to examine modern-day organizations, buildings, and other types of remaining “evidence” from the saint’s life.
• The project includes a directions page and mastery rubric for ELA writing standards.
