This product is part of the Conflict Drama Scripts - Grade 10 script based approach to teaching drama.
There are parts for 21 actors within these scenes (which can be expanded using scenes from the Gr 11 and 12 units). These scenes compose the play "The Body" which is centred around a body being found in a park. All of the scenes are built around the possibility of one or more of the characters being this 'body', but none are specifically linked to it, i.e. these are not 'death scenes.'
This play is meant to challenge the student actor heavily, the parts are demanding and require weeks of preparation in order to be played effectively. In my classes these scenes are the culminating activity, and we often perform this play for classes in the school.
All the scenes in this unit are original, and have been written specifically for this grade level and age group. Teachers should note, however, that this is mature content and, while there is no swearing in the scenes, they are dealing with subject matters that include suicide, drug and alcohol use, violence and bullying.
As well as the scenes themselves, there are 'Notes' to both the students and teacher about the preparation, purpose and use of the scenes.
Teachers should note that this unit is the culmination of the script based approach to teaching drama (Conflict Drama Scenes) that began with Neutral Scenes and the Short Conflict Scenes.
This product is not only intended for experienced teachers looking for materials and specific scene types, it would also be of use to beginning teachers. Teachers should note, however, that this unit will require some teacher participation in terms of deciding how to mark, present and rehearse these materials within their classrooms. This is not a 'classroom kit' with tests and answer keys - these are more the 'materials' that are to be put into students' hands.
