One way that we can better incorporate civics into social studies is through the use of essential questions and a thematic curriculum
. This presentation is an introductory activity to help students think about one of those themes: conflict.
Throughout the presentation, you'll find three essential questions related to conflict. Each question has it's own slide, including additional probative questions and relevant images to help get the conversation started.
This is a great tool to facilitate a discussion in your class, which you could complete in one class period or stretch over two. A Think-Pair-Share activity would be a great way to get started and make sure that every student has an opportunity to talk about the question. You might only focus on the first two questions if your time is limited, but if tie permits try to explore all three. You can read more about how to use these conflict essential questions
in a lesson here.
The powerpoint ends with a writing activity to provide some closure. This would be a great exit ticket if time permits, or it could be a homework assignment. Either way, it will allow you to assess what the students got out of the conversation you had in class.
