This comprehensive unit focuses on conflict in literature and history as it delves deep into early conflicts (Salem Witch Trials) and modern conflicts (Cold War, McCarthy Trials, etc.).
Suitable for grades 9-12, the unit features an anticipation guide, formative assessments, 10 leveled workstations, and a summative assessment. Varied and diverse resources include Arthur Miller's The Crucible, and primary source documents including "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God", "Half-Hanged Mary". Biographies, play reviews, historical documents, and images accompany the unit as well.
Students will be highly engaged in this unit that combines shared readings, guided readings, independent and group reading and writing assignments, and preparation to write formal and informal pieces to inform, entertain, and argue with evidence. This unit was a hit in my 9th-grade English class (high-level material for freshmen, but doable) but is also suitable for grades 10-12.
