The bridge is an easy way for students to solve problems between two people without needing an adult to mediate the conflict. Each person starts at one edge of the bridge and follows the steps in on at a time until they both reach the middle. It is easy to print this out and hang it next to your door or in the hallway. Next time two students have a conflict, they can grab the bridge and go to a quiet spot or in the hallway to work through solving their problem. Ground rules are also on the second page and can be printed back-to-back. It is suggested that the bridge is modeled for students prior to use to demonstrate how the bridge is interactive and together the students move forward in solving their problem one step at a time. The steps include:
1. Each person respectfully stating how you are feeling and why using I-messages.
2. Reflective Listening (what I heard you say is...)
3. Solution generation (maybe we should try)
4. Agreeing upon a solution.
